About Stacey Turner there is much I could say. His exhibition title Osmosis suggests a change of states, or in this case, a fluidity from drawing into painting, between figure and ground, and from the formal qualities of a single brushstroke to the majesty of something much bigger and expressive. Turner talks of tension and release. I see stasis, dance and flickering moments of concentration in a field of rhythmic, intuitive mark-making.
Colour is seasonal and fluoro, culture and nature both in the mix. Stacey is part Pakeha and part Ngapuhi. He is a graduate of the Canterbury University School of Fine Arts, and this, his first project for Jonathan Smart Gallery, is outstanding. It feels both transformative and utterly grounded. Welcome, man.
