Zhonghao Chen paints at full volume. When the works cohere, when compositions have intensities balanced with quiet areas, and brushstroke, medium, oil and marker pen sing from the same song sheet, there can be harmony. Then the paintings become environments, and wondrous compelling ones like Green Indulgence for example.

However sometimes the ecology gets a little freaky - as suggested by this particular exhibition title. Pretty and freak, hanging on the back of Independent Management is somewhat weird. Happy Viking is a bit the same. But Zen in oil and Pocket cosmology have atmospheric qualities and interest about their edges that gives them real oxygen. Zhonghao - allow yourself to be the painter you are, rather than the rebel you aspire to be - and you will again make terrific paintings.
